Software Access Requests and Approvals in Slack

No more access requests buried in DMs, approvals chased by hand, or accounts set up one by one. Employees ask in Slack, managers approve there, and AccessOwl provisions.

The AccessOwl app in Slack, linked to the four steps it runs: request, approve, automatic provisioning and evidence logging

Built for Slack

Request & approve app access directly in Slack

Request access without leaving Slack

No more โ€œwho do I ask for Figma?โ€ DMs. Employees type /request or open the AccessOwl app in Slack, then pick the app and permission.

Nothing to install

Add AccessOwl to Slack once for the whole workspace. Employees donโ€™t install anything themselves.

Request for others

Ask for access for a colleague, or for a contractor by their email address.

Approve in one click

Approvers get a Slack DM with the app, permission and reason. One click says yes, and AccessOwl handles provisioning.

Routed to the right approver

Each app has its own approval policy. Send requests to the manager, the app owner, or both as a multi-step approval.

Time-based access

Requesters can set a time limit, from 30 minutes to 90 days. Access is removed when time is up.

AccessOwl handles provisioning

Once a request is approved, AccessOwl creates the account with the right permissions and notifies the employee that access is granted.

Automated onboarding

New hires get their Slack account and apps automatically, so IT or HR doesn't have to set them up by hand.

Secure offboarding across SaaS apps

Offboarding deactivates Slack and third-party SaaS apps, so leavers lose access even if theyโ€™re still logged in.

Can I manage internal apps with AccessOwl?

Yes. If your internal app has an API, connect it through the AccessOwl API and webhooks to automate grants and removals. If not, add it as a custom app and update access by hand. Either way, all your access stays in one place.

Can I manage access by asking Claude in Slack?

Yes. Connect Claude in Slack to the AccessOwl API, and your IT channel can ask @Claude to request access for a new hire, check who has what, or start a revocation. Claude never approves anything. Its requests follow your normal approval flow. Itโ€™s in public beta and needs a Claude Team or Enterprise plan.

Setup and security

How long does setup take?

Installing the AccessOwl Slack app takes a few minutes. An admin adds it once for the whole workspace, and employees have nothing to install.

Do I need to set up SCIM or API connectors?

For most apps, no. By default, you invite AccessOwlโ€™s service account to the app with user-management rights. Some apps, like GitHub, work better with an API connection, which you authorize once.

Do I need Slack Business+ or Enterprise Grid?

No. AccessOwl doesnโ€™t use Slackโ€™s SCIM API, which Slack keeps on Business+ and Enterprise Grid. It manages Slack accounts through an admin integration account instead. Enterprise Grid workspaces are supported too.

Is AccessOwl SOC 2 certified?

Yes. AccessOwl has a SOC 2 report, and you can request it from our trust center at security.accessowl.com.

Requests and approvals

How do employees request access in Slack?

They type /request in any channel or click Request/Change Access in the AccessOwl Home tab. They pick the app and permission level, for themselves, a colleague or a contractor. The request goes to the right approver automatically.

How do approvals work in Slack?

Each approver gets a Slack DM with the request and approves or denies in one click, with a reason if they deny. Policies can chain steps, like the manager and then the app owner. An Org Admin can approve on someoneโ€™s behalf when theyโ€™re away.

Can I set up multi-step approvals?

Yes. You can create an approval policy with a step for each approver, like the manager first and then the appโ€™s admin or business owner. Each app can have its own policy, and the rest follow your default.

What happens after a request is approved?

If the app is connected, AccessOwl creates the account with the requested permission. If not, the appโ€™s admin gets a task to grant it. Either way, the requester gets a Slack message when access is ready, and every step is logged.

Why is this better than doing access requests through a ticketing tool like Jira?

A ticket only records that someone asked. IT still chases the approval and creates the account by hand, and the ticket often doesnโ€™t show it was done. In AccessOwl, the request, approval and provisioning run as one flow, and every step is logged.

How is this different from an ITSM tool?

ITSM tools handle every kind of IT ticket. AccessOwl is built for access. It knows who has which app and permission, routes each request to the right approver and provisions it. The same access is removed at offboarding or in a review.

Slack accounts

Can AccessOwl create and remove Slack accounts?

Yes. Slack is a managed app like any other. AccessOwl creates accounts when a request is approved or a new hire starts, deactivates them at offboarding, and syncs who has access with which permissions.

Can new hires join the right Slack channels automatically?

Yes, through Slack User Groups. Create groups in Slack, like @Engineering or @Marketing, each with its channels. Add them to your Access Templates, and every new hire lands in the right groups and channels on day one.

Offboarding

What happens to someoneโ€™s Slack account when they leave?

Offboarding deactivates their Slack account along with their other apps. It can start from your HR system on the last day, from the web dashboard or from the Slack Home tab, and it can run in bulk.

How do I catch stray accounts outside of our SSO?

AccessOwl syncs the user lists of your connected apps. An account that matches no one in your directory, like a personal email, shows up as its own user, so you can review or offboard it. Shadow IT discovery also finds apps people signed into with Google or Microsoft.

Reviews and alerts

How do access reviews help with SOC 2 and ISO 27001?

AccessOwl pulls user lists from your apps and starts the review. Reviewers get a Slack message with a link. Each line shows the personโ€™s job title and department, when the access was approved and why, so reviewers can decide instead of rubber-stamping. Access they revoke is removed in connected apps, and every decision is logged as audit evidence.

Why is this better than running access reviews manually?

Manual reviews mean exporting user lists app by app and matching them in spreadsheets. Then you chase approvers, who often approve everything in bulk. Apps outside your SSO get missed, and removals are done by hand. AccessOwl pulls the lists, nudges reviewers, removes revoked access and logs each step.

Is Slack included in access reviews?

Yes. AccessOwl syncs Slack users and permissions, so Slack shows up in reviews like any connected app. Reviewers get a Slack message with a link to the review. Access they remove is taken away automatically.

Which Slack notifications does AccessOwl send?

Requesters hear back at each decision. Approvers and app admins get their tasks, plus a regular summary of whatโ€™s still open. Admins get alerts for newly discovered apps, and HR can get new hires and leavers in a private channel.
